Ask LaMont: Are designer home products worth the extra cost?
Monday, August 11, 2008
Q: I've always been a big fashion lover, and I've noticed that more designers are getting into home accessories, even things like paint. The prices are usually higher than competitors'. Do you think they're worth it?

A: That's a pretty subjective question. It's something you would have to decide for yourself.

Some designers are extremely particular about products that carry their names. They don't just license out their name to a manufacturer who specializes in making the product and then sit around waiting for their cut of sales to start rolling in. They get involved in the development of the product and make sure the quality is consistent with the reputation they've tried to build.

For example, womenswear designer Vera Wang has a popular collection of bed linens, china and mattresses. Accessories designer Kate Spade's tablewear and stationery have gained respect, as well as paint by Ralph Lauren and furniture by Giorgio Armani and Tommy Bahama.

But don't assume that a product is going to be excellent and "worth" the often higher price just because it has a famous designer's name attached. A good way to find out whether a designer product is worth it is to talk with those who have used it. Perhaps the best way is to try it yourself -- and keep your receipt in case it's a huge disappointment.
