A La Roche College student who collapsed Monday died from coronary anomaly, a congenital heart defect, the Allegheny County medical examiner's office said.
Michael Bird, 19, of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., was playing a pickup basketball game at the college's Kerr Fitness and Sports Center when he collapsed about 10 p.m. He was taken to UPMC Passavant, where he was pronounced dead at 11:26 p.m., according to the medical examiner's office.
A memorial service and candlelight vigil were held Tuesday at the college in McCandless.
"It's a very tragic situation, doubly so right at the start of school, when everyone is upbeat," said Ken Service, La Roche vice president of institutional relations.
Visitation and the funeral for the radiological technology sophomore will be held in Poughkeepsie, Mr. Service said.
