State reviews tapes of fights by Shuman inmates
Thursday, August 28, 2008

State inspectors were at Shuman Juvenile Detention Center yesterday to review security tapes of an incident Monday evening.

More than two dozen teen residents reportedly were involved in an altercation in the gymnasium, resulting in injuries to several teens, including one who was kicked in the head and had to be taken to a hospital, where he was treated and released.

Stacey Witalec, spokeswoman for the Department of Public Welfare, said a fight broke out about 5:30 p.m. Monday during a basketball game. As staff intervened, a second fight broke out in another part of the gym. In that incident, Shuman staff had to cover one resident with their own bodies to prevent further injury by the other teens.

Ms. Witalec said the tapes indicated that Shuman met the required 1 to 6 staff to resident staffing ratio at the time the incident occurred.
