Penguins beat Rangers in overtime, 5-4
Thursday, March 04, 2010

NEW YORK -- Jordan Staal scored a power-play goal at 3:42 of overtime to give the Penguins a 5-4 victory against the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden tonight.

The goal came on the Penguins' 55th shot, their season-high. The previous best had been 51 in 1-0 shootout loss to New Jersey Jan. 12.

Penguins right winger Bill Guerin was a late scratch because of back spasms, forcing coach Dan Bylsma to rely on a lineup featuring seven defensemen and just 11 forwards.

Despite that, the Penguins outshot New York, 15-8, during the opening period, although they had to settle for a 2-2 tie at the intermission.

Artem Anisimov put the Rangers in front, 1-0, at 2:17 of the first by beating Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury cleanly on the glove side with a shot from inside the left circle.

Chris Kunitz got that back for the Penguins during a five-on-three power play at 6:03, when he threw in a Sergei Gonchar rebound from the inner edge of the left circle for his ninth.

Staal put the Penguins in front at 9:58 by tossing a backhander toward the net from near the outer edge of the right circle. The puck hit New York goalie Henrik Lundqvist, then bounced off Rangers forward Brian Boyle in front and into the net.

The goal was Staal's 17th.

Chris Drury tied the game again during a New York power play at 14:39, backhanding a shot past Fleury while on his knees to the left of the net.

Fleury, who looked bad on Anisimov's goal, might have looked worse on the one Michal Rozsival scored at 2:03 of the second, when he beat Fleury high on the short side from the right dot to put New York up, 3-2.

Brandon Dubinsky made it 4-2 during a power play at 12:49, as his shot from the top of the left circle slammed off the right post, then struck Fleury in the back and dropped into the net.

Dubinksy's goal gave New York four goals on 12 shots, and prompted Bylsma to replace Fleury -- who had not played in a game since Feb. 14 -- with Brent Johnson.

The switch certainly didn't hurt, as Mike Rupp took a feed from Sidney Crosby and beat Lundqvist from near the left hash at 14:23 for his 12th of the season and first in 19 games.

The Penguins dominated play for much of the third period and pulled even at 11:59, when Alex Goligoski's centering pass from the left corner hit Rangers defenseman Marc Staal and went into the net.

The Penguins outshot the Rangers, 19-1, during the third period. New York got its only shot at 15:24.

The Penguins will play Dallas at 1:08 p.m. Saturday at Mellon Arena.
