2 women killed in Westmoreland crash
Tuesday, August 31, 2010

Two Westmoreland County women were killed in a one-vehicle accident Monday in Unity.

The Westmoreland County coroner's office identified the two victims as Eva M. Brown, the driver who turned 80 on Sunday, and her passenger, Ruth D. Kernes, 89, who was a resident of the Mountainview Nursing Center in Hempfield.

Mrs. Brown, of Hempfield, had driven to the center to pick up Mrs. Kernes to take her for a ride Sunday afternoon, a spokesman for the coroner said.

The two had been riding on Bailey Farm Road just after 3 p.m. in Unity when the driver lost control and the vehicle careened over an embankment.

The vehicle crashed into trees, with the impact killing both women.

Both were pronounced dead at the scene.
