People: Mark David Chapman denied parole, ABC's Westin to resign, Niecy Nash spring bride and Mike Tyson vs. Tupac
Wednesday, September 08, 2010

John Lennon's killer was denied parole in New York, nearly 30 years after gunning down the ex-Beatle outside the musician's New York City apartment building.

The Associated Press reported that the parole board decided not to release Mark David Chapman, 55, after interviewing him Tuesday by teleconference at Attica Correctional Facility in upstate New York.

It was Chapman's sixth appearance before the board since becoming eligible for parole in 2000. He will be eligible again in 2012.

David Westin, the longtime president of ABC News, said he will resign his post at the end of the year.

According to The New York Times, he said in an e-mail to the staff on Monday night that after almost 14 years at the helm, it was time "to move on."

The Times quoted a staff member as saying the decision also related to a conflict between Mr. Westin, 58, and the management ABC and its parent company, Walt Disney, over the financial standing of the news division.

An ABC source said that the news division had been profitable, but the network had sought to increase its profit margin to 15 percent, from 5 percent. In the two most competitive areas of programming, the morning and evening news programs, ABC has been unable to gain ground on leader NBC.

Niecy Nash will be a spring bride, People.com says.

The host of the Style Network's Emmy-winning "Clean House" host is engaged to boyfriend Jay Tucker.

Ms. Nash, 40, a former "Dancing With the Stars" contestant, and her electrical engineer beau announced their plans to get married at a weekend party where guests included her "Dancing" partner Louis van Amstel.

Mike Tyson says he has one regret about his friendship with the late rapper Tupac Shakur.

In a phone interview about the documentary "One Night in Vegas: Tyson & Tupac," which debuted last night on ESPN, Mr. Tyson told the AP, "He always wanted me to smoke weed with him, and I never did it, and I wish I did."

Mr. Tyson said he didn't want it to get out to the public that he smoked pot.

The 25-year-old rapper was shot after a Tyson fight in Las Vegas on Sept. 7, 1996; he died six days later.

"He didn't last long, but the time he did last, every minute, every tenth of a moment was explosive," the boxer said.
