Richland's Jackie Evancho advances in 'America's Got Talent'
Wednesday, September 08, 2010

Richland grade-schooler Jackie Evancho tonight advanced to the finals of NBC's America's Got Talent, where she'll compete Tuesday in Hollywood for the $1 million grand prize.

Jackie, a fifth-grader whose YouTube home videos launched her appearance on the competitive reality show, will be up against two other vocalists and a Virginia Tech dance crew.

"I want to thank Pittsburgh and everyone else for voting for me," said Jackie, 10, moments after host Nick Cannon announced her name on tonight's live broadcast.

The previous night, the petite classical crossover singer earned standing ovations with "Pie Jesu," from Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Requiem."

Viewers voted to decide who would advance to next week's program. Also making the grade were singer Michael Grimm, outlandish operatic singer Prince Poppycock (John Quale) and Fighting Gravity, a blacklight dance group.

The winning act, which will headline an appearance in Las Vegas as well as a 25-city tour of the "America's Got Talent" finalists, will be announced Wednesday.
