Gerry Dulac's NFL Forecast: Week 1
Thursday, September 09, 2010
THURSDAY

Minnesota Vikings (12-4) at New Orleans Saints (13-3), 8:30 p.m.

The Skinny: The Vikings should have won this game when it counted, but they committed too many mistakes. The rematch of the NFC title game will turn out the same way.

Prediction: Saints, 28-24

SUNDAY

Atlanta Falcons (9-7) at Steelers (9-7), 1 p.m.

The Skinny: The Steelers have won seven consecutive games on opening weekend, the longest streak in the league. The Falcons haven't lost a season opener under Coach Mike Smith (2-0) and are coming off back-to-back winning seasons for first time in club history.

Prediction: Steelers, 23-16

Miami Dolphins (7-9) at Buffalo Bills (6-10), 1 p.m.

The Skinny: The Bills have a new head coach (Chan Gailey), but too many of the same players. The Dolphins have the same coach (Tony Sparano), but a new receiver (Brandon Marshall) and linebacker (Karlos Dansby).

Prediction: Dolphins, 23-20

Detroit Lions (2-14) at Chicago Bears (7-9), 1 p.m.

The Skinny: The Lions are hoping to triple their win total with the second-year development of QB Matthew Stafford. The Bears are hoping to reverse their record in their second year with QB Jay Cutler.

Prediction: Bears, 19-17

Indianapolis Colts (14-2) at Houston Texans (9-7), 1 p.m.

The Skinny: The Texans are coming off their first winning season in franchise history and had the NFL's top-ranked pass offense. The Colts are 7-1 and have won three in a row in Reliant Stadium.

Prediction: Colts, 30-27

Denver Broncos (8-8) at Jacksonville Jaguars (7-9), 1 p.m.

The Skinny: Will it be another typical fast start for the Broncos, who were 6-0 last season before imploding? Maybe the Jaguars can use the Jacksonville humidity to their advantage.

Prediction: Jaguars, 23-20

Cincinnati Bengals (10-6) at New England Patriots (10-6), 1 p.m.

The Skinny: A pair of '09 division champs meet in Gillette Stadium where the Patriots have never lost a season opener (6-0). OMG -- Randy Moss, Terrell Owens and Chad Ochocinco all on the same field at once!! Prediction: Patriots, 24-21

Carolina Panthers (8-8) at New York Giants (8-8), 1 p.m.

The Skinny: It wasn't that long ago the Panthers and Giants were the two dominant teams in the NFC. The Giants still aren't that far away. The Panthers, meantime, are starting anew with QB Matt Moore.

Prediction: Giants, 23-10

Cleveland Browns (5-11) at Tampa Bay Buccaneers (3-13), 1 p.m.

The Skinny: Guess which team has the longest regular-season win streak in the NFL? If you guessed the Browns, who won their last four games of 2009, consider yourself a Cleveland fan. Who else would know such a thing?

Prediction: Browns, 16-12

Oakland Raiders (5-11) at Tennessee Titans (8-8), 1 p.m.

The Skinny: Those who want to consider the Titans an easy mark on the Steelers schedule might want to remember Tennessee won eight of its final 10 games last season with Vince Young at quarterback. At least he lasted longer than JaMarcus Russell.

Prediction: Titans, 27-6

Green Bay Packers (11-5) at Philadelphia Eagles (11-5), 4:15 p.m.

The Skinny: The Eagles have parted with Donovan McNabb and turned their high-octane offense over to Kevin Kolb. But not many offenses can generate production like Aaron Rodgers and the Packers.

Prediction: Packers, 34-30

Arizona Cardinals (10-6) at St. Louis Rams (1-15), 4:15 p.m.

The Skinny: Arizona's three-year stronghold on the division title might be disappearing with the retirement of Kurt Warner. But, at least for another week, that won't matter against the Rams, who don't have anyone to complement Sam Bradford.

Prediction: Cardinals 23-9

San Francisco 49ers (8-8) at Seattle Seahawks (5-11), 4;15 p.m.

The Skinny: Pete Carroll gets his third try at being an NFL head coach, and, like the weather, there won't be too many sunny days in Seattle. The opportunity has arrived for QB Alex Smith and the 49ers to win a division title.

Prediction: 49ers, 23-13

Dallas Cowboys (11-5) at Washington Redskins (4-12), 8:20 p.m.

The Skinny: The Redskins have a new coach (Mike Shanahan) and new quarterback (Donovan McNabb) to challenge in the NFC East. They will find out how quickly they have arrived against the Cowboys, who have the league's best opening-game record (34-15-1).

Prediction: Cowboys, 27-21

MONDAY

Baltimore Ravens (9-7) at New York Jets (9-7), 7 p.m.

The Skinny: This will be the first time Jets Coach Rex Ryan faces the team for whom he worked as defensive coordinator. He has Darrelle Revis back and added Antonio Cromartie to stop those new Ravens receivers, Anquan Boldin and T.J. Houshmandzadeh.

Prediction: Jets, 24-20

San Diego Chargers (13-3) at Kansas City Chiefs (4-12), 10:15 p.m.

The Skinny: There is little to stand in the way of the Chargers winning a fifth consecutive division title. Certainly not the Chiefs, who have lost their past three home meetings with the Bolts.

Prediction: Chargers, 31-17
