An Allegheny County judge has scheduled a hearing on the release of documents related to the grand jury investigation of state Sen. Jane Orie, R-McCandless, for later this month.
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette filed a motion on March 30 seeking access to documents filed in Ms. Orie's case that had previously never been sealed. But at an April 8 hearing, Judge John A. Zottola denied the motion and retroactively sealed the documents.
Two weeks ago, the state Supreme Court, which considered an appeal by the newspaper, remanded the case to Judge Zottola, telling the court to "conduct whatever proceedings it deems necessary" to decide if the Post-Gazette has the right of access to documents, specifically since a grand jury presentment was returned against Ms. Orie the day before the records were sealed.
The hearing is set for Sept. 17.
