Saturday, January 28, 2012

Pitt beat No. 9 Georgetown, 72-60, today at the Petersen Events Center. The Panthers improved to 12-0 all-time against teams ranked in the AP top 10 at the Petersen Events Center.

Nasir Robinson led Pitt (13-9, 2-7) with 23 points. He was 9 for 9 from the field and 5 for 6 from the foul line. Robinson did not miss a shot in the game until he missed a free throw with 1:22 remaining.

Lamar Patterson added 18 and Ashton Gibbs 13. Otto Porter had 14 for the Hoyas (16-4, 6-3).

Pitt led, 33-22, at halftime. The Panthers broke the game open with a 13-0 run midway through the first half. They held the Hoyas without a point for almost six minutes and without a field goal for almost seven minutes.

The Panthers led 29-12 with 4:02 remaining in the half, but the Hoyas were able to cut the lead to 11 by halftime with an 8-2 run over the final 2:24 of the half. Greg Whittington made two 3-pointers 61 seconds apart, the second coming with 47 seconds left before halftime. The Hoyas could have cut the lead to single digits with seven seconds remaining, but Porter missed the front end of a one-and-one.

The Hoyas had five field goals in the first half. They matched that total in the first 3:19 of the second half and pulled within five points when Jason Clark converted a 3-point play.

The Hoyas cut the lead to six several times in the second half, but the Panthers had an answer each time. Patterson twice scored after Georgetown got it down to six points, including a 3-point play with 7:21 remaining that gave the Panthers a 53-44 lead.

Two Whittington free throws with 4:10 left made it 55-49, but Dante Taylor scored and Robinson scored on the next possession to make it a 10-point game again. The Hoyas could not climb back into the game after that.
