NATIONAL SUMMARY

A major storm continued to affect the middle of the nation this
afternoon with a sorts of wild weather. A raging snowstorm and
near-blizzard continued over much of eastern Colorado to western
Nebraska. Snow was spreading eastward across Nebraska and will
stretch into Iowa by Saturday. South and east of the storm, areas of
drenching rain and locally severe thunderstorms stretched across the
southern Plains to the central Gulf Coast. There have been reports of
several inches of rain in a few locations over the past 24 hours,
including some needy drought areas of the southern High Plains. A
belt of high pressure was holding the storm off from reaching the
northern Plains. This same belt of high pressure will keep the storm
south of the Great Lakes and much of the Northeast this weekend. Some
rain (and snow) will streak into part of the Ohio Valley states and
the mid-Atlantic, but the storm will be past its peak and
precipitation will dwindle upon moving farther to the east. Locally
severe thunderstorms will push eastward across the lower Mississippi
Valley into the weekend, before weakening upon nearing the southern
Atlantic Seaboard later in the weekend. High pressure was controlling
much of the West. Moisture gathering offshore in the Pacific Ocean is
forecast to move slowly onshore late in the weekend into early next
week along part of the West Coast. The snowstorm will wind down over
Colorado late tonight and the central High Plains during Saturday.

SPECIAL WEATHER

The Indian Ocean Cyclone of the Century...

From late February 2 to early February 3, 1994, Cyclone Geralda made
landfall in Madagascar and caused tremendous damage and loss of life.
The storm destroyed over 10 percent of Madagascar's rice crop,
wrecked the main commercial port of Toamasina and caused major damage
to the nation's infrastructure. Just before landfall, winds gusted to
between 160 and 195 mph. Dozens of people were killed and a half a
million people were left homeless in the wake of the storm. Up to
14.5 inches of rain fell in two days. It was said to have been the
worst cyclone to hit the island nation since 1927.
